I kinda like what he's done with the side vents.

Then again, i distinctly remember liking the 512M when it came out, so my testarossa taste is categorically bad.

No, I think the side vents look fantastic! Much better than stock.

If you had bought a 512M five years ago you'd be a rich man now!

I understand that "Kinja Gold" accounts allow a user to put other people on an enemies list. That would come in handy when, for example, some people start dissing on the straked vents of the Testarossa.

;-)

Really? They're coming back up now? That's sort of surprising.

This morning, my friend and I were talking about 996 prices. I feel like they must be getting close to bottoming out, you can find pretty nice ones for $20K these days.

They are coming back big time! They're listing for over $300K now. One is going up to auction for $375K.

Nobody cares how it looks anymore. All they care about is the low production numbers!

I think some 996s could start appreciating:

GT3 (these ones already have appreciated since bottoming out)

Turbos (not sure if they have been going up yet or not)

Non GT3s/Turbos that are the more desirable cars. Such as the 4S because more power (I don't remember seeing many or any 996 2S cars) and later year C2s that had the IMS issue prevented.

Holy cow! Thats pretty crazy. 575Ms look so terrible to me now days! Especially those rear taillilghts! ugh!

I dont necessarily think the 996 will ever be worth all that much, but it seems like the crazy fast depreciation has at least slowed down quite a bit by this point. Funnily enough the ad we were looking at talked about the IMS issue.

I agree! I don't mind the front but the taillights don't work on that car. Ferrari hacked the quad round lights on the car and it looks literally tacked on. It doesn't suit the way the car is designed AT ALL. But it doesn't matter, prices keep going up! If there was a rare and fast version of the Mondial it would be appreciating too...

Yeah I don't think the 996 will ever see 993-like appreciation. But it could go up a little. I checked out the ad you linked. I wonder if the owner actually has documentation to prove what was done. If he did it himself then no docs would be available. My dad does all his own work. Only bummer about that is none of his cars have docs...

I think the later year 996 Carreras are nicer. They have the improved headlights from the Turbo and some other changes. And the 4S is nice because you get MOAR POWER and the widebody.

I'm generally not a big fan of the 996 or really even the 997 911, but I kind of think the 997 will be worth something someday if electric power steering proves unable to provide the same resolution in feedback as the old hydraulic systems had.

My friend and I were really only discussing the 996 though because he was planning on selling his GTO and using the money for some other car. $20K is already pushing it (his GTO is really nice....but still) anything nicer than the most basic 2WD Carrera is going to be way out of his price range.

I've never driven a 996. So I can't compare to my 997.2 C2.

I think my base Carrera could gain value one day because of the issue you brought up. It's a reliable car and has the true Porsche steering. I've read a big technical article on electric power steering and it seems physically impossible to make the feedback as good as a hydraulic setup. The feedback is simulated. It will get better and better but it might be impossible for man to program a computer to make the steering wheel give you feedback as well as nature does it. It might be virtually the same but still "feel" not as good.

This is my overall opinion on the 997 (and all Porsches in general) - great car but overpriced. Had I been able to get it for at least $20K less than I did then I wouldn't constantly feel like I paid too much. You just spend a lot for what you get...
